The Best Sauna and Cold Plunge Experience in Chicago
There is something that happens in a sauna that is difficult to explain until you have experienced it. The heat slows everything down. The noise of the city; the meetings, the notifications, the pace; all of it falls away. And in that stillness, something unexpected tends to happen. People talk. Strangers become familiar. A shared silence becomes its own kind of connection. We built Eastend around that feeling.

What Makes a Great Sauna and Cold Plunge Experience?
Chicago has no shortage of wellness options. But when we set out to open Eastend at 1132 W Fulton Market, we were thinking about something specific: what does it mean to build a sauna and cold plunge experience that is genuinely for everyone? From us, it meant a place where all people are welcome to sweat together, as a community.
Most wellness spaces, if we are being honest, are built for a particular kind of person. A particular income level, a particular aesthetic, a particular vision of what health looks like. We wanted to build something different where you do not need a particular body type, background, or a specific reason.
That conviction shapes everything about how we operate. The way our staff guides first-timers through the protocol. The way we have designed the space so that no one ever feels like they are doing it wrong. The way our community sessions bring people together around a shared ritual rather than a solo performance.

The Eastend Protocol: Finnish Sauna and Cold Plunge
Our signature experience is contrast therapy — alternating between our Finnish sauna and cold plunge pools in cycles.
Here is what a session looks like:
• 15 minutes in our Finnish sauna, set between 180–194°F
• 3 minutes in the cold plunge, set between 40–55°F
• 10 minutes of rest
Repeat two to three times. That is the 15:3:10 protocol, and it is one of the most well-researched recovery and longevity practices available today.
The science behind it is compelling. Norepinephrine spikes, heat shock protein activation, cardiovascular training effects, improved sleep quality. But honestly, what keeps our members coming back is not the data. It is how they feel walking out. And increasingly, it is who they walk out with.
Sauna & Cold Plunge as a Social Practice
In many countries — where the sauna tradition is centuries old — the sauna was never a solo activity. It was where families gathered, where neighbors connected, where conversations happened that could not happen anywhere else. The heat creates an unusual kind of honesty. The discomfort strips away pretense. People show up as themselves.
We have watched this happen at Eastend every single day since we opened.
We have seen first-timers arrive nervous, get guided through the experience by a regular, and leave as members. We have seen corporate teams use a sauna/plunge session as a more meaningful team-building experience than any offsite they have ever done. We have seen people who came in alone leave with plans to come back together.
This is what we mean when we say Eastend is a community.
